Everything Jesus teaches is profound, but perhaps the most profound is that the way to care about God is to care about other people. The cross demonstrates beyond any and all doubt that God cares about people. And thus, when we care about other people, we are caring about God Almighty.

Caring about other people is not Christianity, nor is it any other religion. Rather, it is the way we are created to behave and thus, it is the most fulfilling thing we can do. Like Jesus says, “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” We should make an effort to care about everyone, even our enemies. Jesus places special emphasis on caring for the sick, the poor, immigrants, minorities, the vulnerable and the otherwise oppressed.

Some conservative Christians say that this commandment below only applies to caring about followers of Jesus, because Jesus was talking to his followers at the time he said this. But the bulk of the teaching and deeds of Jesus is all about caring for other people, whether they are friends or enemies, whether we know them or not and regardless of what they believe or fail to believe.

From Romans 13:8–10: “Owe no one anything except to love one another, for those who love another have fulfilled the law. For the commandments, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness, you shall not covet and any other commandment, are summed up in this saying, namely, you shall love your neighbor as yourself. Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law.”

Jesus says, “this is my commandment, that you love one another.”
